Utah lawmaker calls for an end to compulsory education<\/a> by David Edwards in The Raw Story.<\/p>\nThe Text:<\/strong> A Republican lawmaker in Utah is calling on his state to put an end to the requirement that children go to school.<\/p>\nOn Tuesday, Deseret News flagged a Friday article posted to state Sen. Aaron Osmond\u2019s blog where he says that Utah \u201cshould take a close look at repealing compulsory education.\u201d<\/p>\n
Osmond argues that requiring children to attend school has caused some parents to \u201ccompletely disengage themselves from their obligation to oversee and ensure the successful education of their children.\u201d<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a result, our teachers and schools have been forced to become surrogate parents, expected to do everything from behavioral counseling, to providing adequate nutrition, to teaching sex education, as well as ensuring full college and career readiness,\u201d he writes. \u201cI believe the time has come for us to re-evaluate what we expect of parents and the public education system.\u201d<\/p>\n
Osmond recommends \u201crestoring the parental right to decide if and when a child will go to public school\u201d to uphold the \u201cthe principles of personal freedom and unalienable rights.\u201d<\/p>\n
Part of the solution, he believes, is to \u201cstop dictating the number of hours a child must be present in a classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201c[I]f a parent decides to keep their child home or to go on a family vacation, it\u2019s the responsibility of that parent to ensure their child completes the assignments and stays current with their class,\u201d Osmond says. \u201cSimilarly, if a child consistently misbehaves, it\u2019s the teacher\u2019s right to send that child home to their parent until he or she is ready to respect and appreciate their opportunity to be educated.\u201d<\/p>\n
State School Board member Leslie Castle told Deseret News that ending compulsory education was not realistic at a time when so many children need the services that schools provide.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe live in a society where some children require help beyond the ability of their parents,\u201d she explained. \u201cThose students don\u2019t deserve to be punished, they don\u2019t deserve to be disqualified.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe same could be said about the Legislature that [Osmond] is saying about parents, that the Legislature has completely disengaged themselves,\u201d Castle added.<\/p>\n
Osmond plans plans to introduce legislation in the upcoming state Senate session to modify compulsory education requirements.<\/p>\n
