From a WP chat with Henry Rollins:

Henry Rollins: If James Frey, a former drug addict made up some things in his book, anyone who would be surprised should maybe get a reality check. As far as books like that, if you liked it, got something from it, who cares if it’s true? If you have to watch Oprah Winfrey to get your reading list, you deserve any literary hardships that come your way. A lot of people prefer fantasy to the truth.

Illiterate Literacy

Literacy of College Graduates Is on Decline

This reminds me vaguely of the material of the preface to Dorothy Sayers’ book “The Mind Of The Maker”. She deduces in the preface that most people are practically illiterate, because (among other things) they are incapable of distinguishing presentation of ideas by the author from the personal beliefs of the author.
