Congolese Soldiers Explain Why They Rape Women

Taken from The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo, the video above asks soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo why they rape women. Rape has been used as a weapon of war throughout the decade-long conflict, with Amnesty International and other organizations estimating that between 75,000 to 150,000 women have been raped during the civil war.
It’s too bad that these soldiers rely on an outdated and ridiculous superstition to guide them…if only they accepted the Lord Jesus Christ into their bodies, eternal salvation could be theirs.

“Outdated?” How long ago was the Bible written again? Even the “New” Testament is millenniums old. The mindset you have is the same as the Christian European imperialists of the 19th and 20th centuries that destroyed these cultures and is undoubtedly responsible for the chaotic and often militant nature of some African nations. By using your religion as a source of hierarchy over these people, you’re proving no point. Using some simple human morality, you could easily demonstrate that rape is immoral to our inherent rights as human beings, and it is wrong to treat women with such disrespect and violence. If Jesus advocated and encouraged rape, it would still be wrong at a moral, humanistic level.

This is a ridiculously sad situation that we’re living in. I’m enraged that rape exists at all. Only rapists can stop rape. And nothing more than widespread and complete intolerance of it will stop it.
Maybe I’m imagining, maybe I’m just trying very hard to find some spark of humanity in this shitty world, but I got the feeling that some of those soldiers may have even been genuinely remorseful, and only following their commanders orders and feel that they have to do it to prove to their loyalty. Of course this is no fking excuse, as they could always kill themselves.
It’s embedded in their culture. It’s embedded in ours too, which is why we need to do everything we can to rip it out, and really deconstruct all of our traditional modes of thought and neurosemantic programs to root out all of our weird social-power monkey issues.
